The Dirtbag
Driggs, Idaho. 2019
Jose with the rack for the Full Exum, which we never climbed. Instead: huckleberries, hip-hop, heavy packs and his first steps into a wider world. Mentorship was a new feeling for me. If in Victor, don’t miss the huckleberry milkshakes. We had five. 35mm.

Into the Unknown
Shaqsha, Peru. 2023
Diego and I had brought four ice screws to climb the face. One was in our anchor, and I needed one for the final anchor. That left me two for this entire pitch, a wild and spicy excavation up the crest of the mountain towards its 5,700m summit. Photo by Diego Mac Dougall.

Moments We Remember
El Potrero Chico, Mexico. 2021
A father and his young son ride on an ATV while a street dog chases them. The child cackles and squeals in an expression of pure joy. The dog barks, playfully. The smile of the father is visible even from across the road, where I sit at a plastic table, eating tacos. 35mm.

Bougainvillea and Sky
Lisbon, Portugal. 2018
Earth and sky, flores y failures. A dreamy moment amidst an unhappy visit. Don’t speak to me in Portuguese, I won’t respond.

The Trudge
Pisco, Peru. 2023
Step, step, breathe. Step, step, breathe. Step, step, heave for air. The trudge towards the top of the world hurts in the bitter pre-dawn wind. The panorama from the summit reveals a shocking truth: this is the smallest mountain around.

Alone in the Alps
Valle Blanche, France. 2023
Enrico and I posthole our way across the glacier. I left my skis at home. He gamely accepts the adventure anyways. There is one other party in the col this day; mounted on skis, they quickly disappear over a ridge, leaving us alone with Mont Blanc.

Public Service Announcement
Olympic Peninsula, Washington. 2022.
Listed on the board outside a small police station, somewhere between Port Angeles and Forks. Keep your eyes peeled. 35mm.
Proving Grounds
Vail Amphitheater, Colorado. 2023
Vail is an intimidating place. Any day in which you show up to climb in the amphitheater, you will find some of the best drytoolers and ice climbers in Colorado — and some who just think they are the best. Here: Tyler Howe climbs King Cobra (M10) while under the sight of a professional photographer. 35mm.
Moody in Memory
Tofino, British Columbia. 2022
We walk the beach, up and down. It is windy, cold, grey and fun. Subdued, despite our best efforts. I cannot help but imagine her here with other people. What she thinks, I don’t feel I know. Our time is too short, as always. I forget my camera; bar staff mails my film back to the States. 35mm.
On the Precipice
Fisher Towers, Utah. 2022
“Ancient Art” is the most popular summit in the desert. We second-shifted and still arrived to a huge clusterfuck of parties, going both up and down. 35mm.

Moraine Camp
Tocllaraju, Peru. 2023
Tocllaraju high camp, 5,000m. Exhausted and cranky, we sleep little. Outside the tent, 2 a.m., I awake to find a mouse has nested inside my boots.

Dr. Suess Trees
Joshua Tree, California. 2017
Joshua Tree is a place I visit several times. One I will return to again, I’m sure. The climbing is only okay but the hang is awesome. Here you’ll meet some characters — or you’ll be the character.
